In October of 1949, Stuart Powell opened up his first used car lot in his home town of Perryville, KY and began selling and servicing cars. His father was a Chevrolet dealer in the same town who, unfortunately, got out of the business in 1945 due to health problems. The car business was in Stuart's blood.

MAKING THE MOVE
After a time in Perryville, Powell migrated to working at Mattingly and Rapier's Chevrolet dealership in Danville. The pair also owned a dealership in Lancaster at this time, and in 1953 they asked Mr. Powell to run this location across from the old Garrard County Stock Yards. Mr. Powell admits that "they were a little hesitant in dealing with me on that dealership." He believes they saw the passion in his eyes for ownership once again.
In 1960, a building became available for sale in Lancaster on Richmond Street - perfect for Mr. Powell's Ford dealership. At this point, he had more than a decade of experience selling cars, and since he was born and raised in the automotive industry, he felt it was time to start something new.
He hired one sales person and one bookkeeper. "It was a very small crew", Powell stated. Today, working in Danville, he has a staff of 46 people and many can be directly traced back to that original small crew from Garrard County, he said. It is one Stuart Powell family!
In the early 1970s, Ford Motor Company was cutting back on dealerships in smaller areas and Lancaster was on their radar. Ford insisted that Mr. Powell take the dealership to Danville. With many customers already in the Boyle County area, he took the move into consideration and in 1972 Powell opened a Ford dealership in a rented building on Main Street in Danville. During this time, he maintained the Ford Dealership in Lancaster, but he eventually sold it in 1978.
